Place Proper Fractions on the Number Line

Many students struggle when it comes to placing fractions on the number line. Once they understand the concept, they need loads of practice. Students need the kind of practice that gets more challenging as they get more proficient at the task. This interactive slideshow is for students who are familiar with the concepts of proper fractions, how to place fractions on number lines, equivalent fractions, and unit fractions.

Placing Unit Fractions on the Number Line

The slideshow starts out with a super simple task: click the shape to show where one over one belongs on the number line. This first slide reminds students that one over one is also a unit fraction; not all unit fractions are proper fractions. Since there is only one shape to click it is a guaranteed success! All number lines in the slideshow have zero and one clearly marked. Each number line is divided into equal segments that correspond with the unit fraction in question.

Explore the Commutative Property

Your students will enjoy exploring the commutative property. At the same time, they will create colorful images that will help them recall math facts. This activity works with both addition and multiplication. Students who investigate the commutative property are better able to decide which operation to use when solving word problems. These activities also give students time to practice math facts, use academic vocabulary, and develop that elusive quality known as number sense.
