Skip counting is one of the small joys in life.

Knowing what comes next. Counting faster and faster. Skip counting with your friends or classmates.

Skip counting by three makes multiplication facts sticky.

Variations increase fun and difficulty.

Watch the slide show and whisper:

  • each number in the series as it appears.
    • (on screen) whispered: (0) zero, (3) three, (6) six, ( 9) nine, (12) twelve . . .
  •  the NEXT number in the series as each new number appears.
    • (0) three, (3) six, (6) nine, (9) twelve, (12) fifteen . . .
  • the multiplication problem as each answer appears.
    • (0) zero times three, (3) one times three, (6) two times three, (9) three times three . . .
    • Remind the students to focus on the pattern ~ no one is asking kids to memorize 29 times three!
    • Yet, they could notice that 60+27 is the same as and easier than 29×3.

Divide the class into two groups ~ two same size groups or an individual/small group and the rest of the class. Watch the slide show and:

  • one group says the part of the number from the ten’s place while the other group says the part of the number in the unit’s place.
    • (group 1) group 2: (silent) zero, (silent) three, (silent) six, (silent) nine, (twelve) twelve, fif – (teen), eight (teen), (twenty-) one, (twenty-) four . . .
  • one group says even numbers and the other group says odd numbers.
    • (zero), three, (six), nine, (twelve), fifteen, (eighteen) . . .

A Mindful Exploration of Proper Fractions

Help your students make sense of fractions.

I started teaching in 1987, which means I’ve collected many tips and tricks along the way.  In this ebook, I share concepts, strategies, and classroom materials to help you make math sticky.

Along with this useful ebook, you will receive weekly emails from StickyMath@UnCommon-Core.com. I send information like: teacher tips, educational ideas, book reviews, curated lists, reviews of educational sites, and free first drafts of products that I’m creating for my TPT store. That way, you get helpful ideas and free stuff, while I get some feedback before I finalize products and put them up for sale.

I value your privacy. I will never sell your information. You may unsubscribe at any time.

All the best!
