Placing Proper Fractions on the Number Line

Many students struggle when it comes to placing fractions on the number line. Once they understand the concept, they need loads of practice. Students need the kind of practice that gets more challenging as they get more proficient at the task.

This interactive slideshow is for students who are familiar with the concepts of proper fractions, how to use denominators and numerators to place fractions on number lines, equivalent fractions, and unit fractions. This slideshow allows students to drag and drop fractions to their place on the number line between zero and one.  Placing Proper Fractions on the Number Line cannot be used in presentation mode.

The Tasks are Easy at First

Throughout the slideshow, like denominators are shown in the same color. The same color is also used for the tick marks that appear on the number lines. Whole numbers, zero and one, are shown in black. Numbers in the first few slides have the same denominator.

Numbers with different denominators are slowly introduced. When needed, the halfway mark is also indicated. Students who know that five-tenths is equal to one-half will make sure to align those numbers vertically. After having moved the numbers to their places, students can continue on to the next slide either by clicking on that slide in the film clip to the left or by using the right arrow on the keyboard.

The last of the fourteen slides has a couple of equivalent fractions as well as ten different fractions for students to place on the number line. Students can write their name on the first slide making it easier for you to track students’ scores.

Placing Proper Fractions on the Number Line is part of a series of interactive slideshows.
