Academic Vocabulary – Quotient

How often do you think of division as repeated subtraction?  Maybe, I should ask:

Quotiens do you think of division as repeated subtraction?  Yep, in Latin quotiens means ‘how often’!  As in how often can you subtract 8 from 72?

If it sounds familiar, that’s because quotiens is the great-grandparent of ‘quotient’ the answer to a division problem.

Quotient comes from the Latin root ‘quot‘ meaning how many.  How many threes are there in 12?
