Addressing Cultural Stereotypes transcript

About twenty years ago, I managed The International Classroom Connection program, ICC, for an organization now called Global Minnesota.

ICC sent multicultural speakers to K-12 classrooms throughout the state. Most of the speakers were international students from The University of Minnesota.

As part of their training we asked them which cultural stereotypes about people from their country they would like to address head on.

One speaker said she was unaware of any negative stereotypes about people from her country. Fortunately, other international students participating in the training chimed in ~ helpfully listing five or six derogatory views about people from her country.

In a different training, another young woman wailed, “Americans think everyone from my country eats cats and dogs!” She wanted to set the record straight, adding, “We don’t eat cats and dogs ~ as often as you think we do.”
