Multiply by Nine- Finger Mat

Your students understand the concept of multiplication. Now they just need to gain fluency with their math facts. Luckily, the nine times table is SUPER EASY!

Nine has an important location on the number line. It is the number just before ten ~ and ten is the the base of our number system. This is why there are some fantastic numerical patterns in multiples of nine, that do not happen with multiples of any other number.

For example, multiples of nine have a digit sum of nine. Since we have ten fingers, we can use one of them to represent the multiplier and the rest will naturally add up to nine.

Your students will:

  • gain fluency with the nine times table.
  • discover some way-cool numerical patterns.
  • learn how to calculate digit sums.
  • explore using digit sums to check accuracy when multiplying by nine.
  • Pick up an easy way to multiply single digits by nine.

I started teaching in 1987, which means I’ve collected many tips and tricks along the way.  In this ebook, I share concepts, strategies, and classroom materials to help you make math sticky.

Along with this useful ebook, you will receive weekly emails from StickyMath@UnCommon-Core.com. I send information like: teacher tips, educational ideas, book reviews, curated lists, reviews of educational sites, and free first drafts of products that I’m creating for my TPT store. That way, you get helpful ideas and free stuff, while I get some feedback before I finalize products and put them up for sale.
