Fold a Polar Bear

A Very Simple Bear

The same origami model makes two different bears ~ one sniffing the air ~ the other sniffing the ground. Download this pdf with easy instructions to accompany a youtube video demonstration, and a page long explanation of how to read symbols in origami directions.

Origami fascinates scientists and students ~ probably for the same reason; it’s like magic. Start with a square of paper. Make four folds. Add some details, and you have your very own bear.

This model is usually done with all white paper and called a polar bear. However, as a bright student recently asked, ‘Why can’t it be a grizzly?’ Well, guess what?

Of course it can become any kind of bear you want! In order to make this model look like a bear, use paper that is the same color on both sides. I cut out some squares from paper bag and started folding.

To fold a little cub, use smaller paper, pinch back any sharp angles to give the model a soft, round feeling, and make the nose and ears a tiny bit larger in proportion to the face. Also, make the first fold a bit larger than you would when folding an adult.

Hope you and your students enjoy this simple bear!
